September 6/7, 2008 :: As students head back to school or finish up there first couple weeks, this is a stand alone sermon about a boy who was raised in church...literally!  "Obedience to Christ is the pathway to knowing God."

"What you believe determines how you behave!"  All summer we’ve been in the bible book of Romans. The first part we called “Unashamed.” Paul said in Romans 1:16, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes." And if you are a follower of Jesus Christ and unashamed of the good news – we believe that if you live out the teachings of these last few chapters (12-15), your life will look unique, weird, a little freaky to those watching. It’ll be a freak show. But not in the way where people come to watch in a “gross me out, show me something freaky” kind of way. But people will see something in your life that is genuine and real: a life at peace and full of love and kindness and obedience to Christ.

Everything :: that is what Jesus Christ is.  Everything is what He asks for.  Everything is caught in the balance of who He is.  Everything begins now.  Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth who lived 2000 years ago, claimed to be the One and Only Son of God as well as the One and Only Way to know God and go to heaven after we die.  The bible claims that He created the world and everything in it and that he holds everything together.  Everything.

In 1996, I read a book titled The Signature of Jesus by Brennan Manning.  He tells of a man who refused to allow a cross or crucifix in his home, “I can’t stand the Cross.  It is a denial of all that I value in life.  I am a proud man, sensual, I seek pleasure.  The Cross reproaches me.  It says ‘You’re wrong.  Your life must take this shape.  This is the only true interpretation of life, and life is true only when it takes this form.’”  In his honesty he knows that to do so, he must commit himself to a way of life that contradicts his own...the way of the cross, the signature of Jesus.  What about you?  Is the signature of Jesus (the Cross) the signature of your life?  Or is it just an ancient relic or a piece of jewelry?  Your invited to HSM over the next 3 weeks as we approach this sacred, beautiful mess called the Cross of Christ.
